Edward A. Hoffman, 83, Claypool, passed away at 10:55 a.m. Sept. 2, 2015, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.
He was born May 16, 1932, in Fulton County, to William Foster and Eathel Drudge Hoffman. On July 10, 1954, in Akron, he married Martha L. Wharton, who survives in Claypool.
He served in the Army Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base. He was a farmer; a gunsmith at Schutz Brothers, North Manchester; and a service manager at McKown Cadillac, Smith Ford and Schaefer Ford. He owned and operated Ed’s Repair Shop, Claypool. He was a clerk and mechanic at the United Telephone garage in Warsaw, and retired from Biomet.
He was a 50-year member of Warsaw Masonic Lodge F&AM and Warsaw Order of the Eastern Star. He was a past master of Sidney Masonic Lodge F&AM; a former member of Akron Masonic Lodge F&AM; and a member of Fort Wayne Mizpah Shrine, Fort Wayne Scottish Rite, American Legion Post 49, NRA and Gulf Shores (Alabama) United Methodist Church. For many years he was the emcee for the church’s Snowbird Club. Many vacations were spent working with various mission projects in Haiti. He was a professional dance roller skater where he won Gold Medal Skater. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing and making fishing flies. He enjoyed shooting and participated in shooting contests. He also enjoyed playing guitars.
Also surviving are: two daughters, Kathy R. (and spouse William) Hamman, Winona Lake, and Michelle S. (and spouse Don) Hirschaut, Aptos, Calif.; a son, Rick Hoffman, Rochester; four grandchildren: Jay Hamman, Carbondale, Ill.; Sara Hamman McConnell, Warsaw; Meridith Hirschaut, Chico, Calif.; and Nathan Hirschaut, Aptos, Calif.; a great-grandson, William Isaac McConnell; and one sister, Emogene Daine, Rochester. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wayne, Earl and the Rev. Elvin Hoffman.
A Masonic memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. today. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, with Clark Shepherd, founder of Allowing Christ to Shine (an organization dedicated to helping the children of Haiti), officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Warsaw’s American Legion Post 49 and VFW Post 1126. Burial is in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
Calling is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
