Education Summit On Tap

School safety issues will be the focus of Education Summit VI next month.

Education summits, which began in 1994, bring schools, businesses and community members together to develop programs that help students "achieve the skills needed to become successful citizens."

This year's summit, scheduled for Oct. 12 from 7 to 10:30 a.m. at 2517 Restaurant, Warsaw, tackles a subject that has become a major concern in both rural and urban areas.

"This year we're looking at the whole issue affecting school and community safety," said John Ganyard, materials manager at R.R. Donnelley & Sons and chairman of the summit.

The summit this year will not feature speakers as in the past, Ganyard said. Instead, discussion groups will focus on such topics as conflict and anger management, dropouts, parental effectiveness, expelled and suspended students and reviving a sense of community.

The purpose of the summits is to "bring together business, schools, educational staff and the community to focus in on what are some of the issues in education and our community," Ganyard said.

Some programs that began in past summits include the Gold Card Program, which rewards students for maintaining good grades and attendance; requesting a high school transcript from every job applicant; promoting the value of a high school education; encouraging continuing education; and abiding by employment regulations for high school-age individuals.

The Summit sponsored by the education committee of the Warsaw/Kosciusko County Chamber of Commerce. It is open to the public and reservations may be made by calling 372-8345, or 800-776-6311, or by e-mail, jmccarthy-sessing@wkchamber.com by noon Oct. 8.
