One of the best ways to fight the methamphetamine problem in Kosciusko County is education.
The more the community knows about the drug, the better it will be able to combat the problem.
Today at 7 p.m. is a prime opportunity for members of the community to educate themselves about meth in Kosciusko County as Kosciusko County law enforcement, Serenity House, United Way of Kosciusko County and Bowen Center are joining forces to present "Meth 2010: Killing a Community".
The workshop, which will be held at Center Lake Pavilion, is meant to educate the general public about ways to combat meth and what is being done to eliminate the problem in Kosciusko County.
Kosciusko County is ranked third in the state for meth labs, but the problem extends way beyond the user.
Explosions and fires can be caused by meth labs, and the byproducts of meth production are toxic. The cost to clean up meth labs can be thousands of dollars, which is paid by taxpayers.
Children in homes where people make or use meth are exposed to dangerous chemicals. Children of meth users also can experience health and emotional problems because of neglect.
"Meth 2010: Killing a Community" will feature presentations by the Kosciusko County Drug Task Force and the Indiana State Police and information will be available from representatives of Serenity House and The Bowen Center.
A former meth cooker as well as doctors and lawyers will be available to answer questions and give their views of the county's meth problem.
If you are unable to attend the workshop, more information is available at www.killingacommunity.com The slide show from "Meth 2010: Killing a Community" is available and links to more information about meth in Indiana, treatment options, help for users and how to report meth crimes are all available on the website.
