Eaton Raises The Bar For Valley Scoring

Posted

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊFriday was a bittersweet night for Tippecanoe Valley senior Trey Eaton.

On one hand, the Manchester Squires handed his Vikings their first loss of the season.

On the other hand, Eaton broke the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation's career scoring record.

At the 2:56 mark in the first quarter of Friday night's game against Manchester, Eaton hit a three-point basket to secure his place in Tippecanoe Valley history.

That three-point basket broke Ron Dittman's career scoring record of 1,461 points set in 1975.

"Trey has been sick all week and missed school a couple days," said Tippecanoe Valley coach Bill Patrick. "You could tell he wasn't feeling well. He didn't shoot the ball well, and his legs were not there like normal. He also missed three straight free throws, and that doesn't happen much. Before tonight he had hit 35 free throws in a row."

Eaton finished Friday night's game with a game-high 24 points, bringing his career total to 1,478 with six games still left in the regular season.

"I was sick most of the week, and so were a lot of our players," said Eaton. "A lot of us were playing sick tonight. Casey Wise and I were both sick most of the week, and we have only had seven or eight players at practice every night this week."

But Eaton, who has played on the varsity squad since a freshman, did not even realize he had broken the corporation record.

"I feel very honored to break the record of a very good player who came through the school," said Eaton.

However, the humble senior was quick to give credit where he feels it is due.

"I couldn't have done this without the support I've had from my family and the players on my team this year."

The senior standout, who tops the list of state scoring leaders this week, hits the court again Friday night against West Central.
