LAPORTE – Warsaw may have taken a little time getting untracked at LaPorte Saturday night, trailing by six after the first quarter. But the Tigers hung in there, and led by junior Kyle Mangas and senior Paul Marandet Warsaw pulled out a 53-46 win over the Slicers. Mangas was perfect on 10 free throws and finished with 23 points, while Marandet was six of seven from the line on his way to a 17-point night. “After the game, Paul Marandet walked into the locker room and wrote ‘perseverance’ on the chalk board,” Warsaw coach Doug Ogle said. “I couldn’t agree more; we persevered after a rough start. We looked like we hadn’t played for a while. They shot the ball well, and they were the best team we’ve played to date at getting the ball inside.” The turning point in the contest came with 4:12 left in the game and LaPorte holding a two-point lead. After a Slicer turnover, LaPorte coach Tom Wells was called for a technical foul. Marandet hit both free throws to draw Warsaw within two points, then on the ensuing possession Mangas was fouled and hit both his charities to tie the game. Slicer senior guard Ben Walker hit a leaning jumper to allow LaPorte to retake the lead, but Marandet drove inside and completed a traditional three-point play to give Warsaw the lead for good. LaPorte worked the ball around the perimeter, looking to take the ball inside and holding the ball for 38 seconds before Owen Strieter settled for a wild shot that missed, with Marandet gathering the rebound. Warsaw’s Evan Schmidt was fouled on the Tigers’ next two possessions, and he hit three of four free throws. LaPorte couldn’t find the bucket the rest of the way, and Mangas’ two free throws with 10.1 seconds left sealed the deal. Early on, LaPorte did pretty much whatever it wanted, and worked the ball in to the low post to 6-foot-4 junior forward Scott Cooper, classmate Ben Dermody and Walker, who all passed well in the paint and found the open man in establishing an early 13-7 lead after the first quarter. Warsaw chipped only two points off the lead in the second quarter, but was finding its way slowly but surely. By the end of three quarters, in spite of key reserve Riley Rhoades fouling out at the 4:28 mark of the period, the Tigers had managed to tie the game at 38. “We felt that being down by four at halftime, we should be encouraged by that; we hadn’t played well and we were only down four,” Ogle said. “We had to give ourselves a little grace; we looked like a team that hadn’t played in 10 days or so (since a Dec. 22 home win over Triton). “We struggled guarding them in the post. But as the game worked its way down, the value of Mangas and Marandet showed up in a lot of ways; free throws especially. We were 18 of 21 and they were 7 of 9.” In the decisive fourth quarter, Marandet and Mangas were a combined 10 of 11 from the line. Walker finished with 18 points and Dermody 10 for LaPorte Now 9-0 on the season, Warsaw returns to Northern Lakes Conference play Friday night when it travels to Middlebury to take on Northridge.
