BOURBON — Duane Douglas “Squirrel” Westafer 65, Englewood, Fla., formerly of Bourbon, passed away Jan. 9, 2017, from an eight-month illness to cancer. His family was at his side at the time of his death. He was born July 4, 1951, in Rochester, to the late Eugene F. “Dusty” and Barbara L. Mullins Westafer. He was a 1970 Triton High School graduate. He was associated with the American Trotting Breed Association, pony racing. He raced harness sulky ponies for several years. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1971 and was a member of Bourbon American Legion Post 424. He was part-owner/operator of the Bourbon Foundry (cast iron) along with his father, Dusty, and brother Dave until the foundry sold to an aluminum foundry in 1998. The Bourbon Foundry was the first inductee to the Triton Hall of Fame as a contributor to the community. Squirrel loved sports and his family. He will be greatly missed. He was also a Triton girls basketball coach for 12 years, having several winning seasons. He enjoyed sporting events and he was a true Notre Dame fan for Irish basketball and football, having season tickets to both. “Go, Irish.” After retiring, he enjoyed the warmer climates living in Englewood, Fla. Golfing and fishing were his hobbies in his earlier years. He is survived by his children: daughters Tana (Mike) Johnson, Bourbon, and Ashlee Westafer (Robert Blackburn), Plymouth; and sons Matthew (Becky) Westafer and Andrew (Kelly) Westafer, both of Bourbon. He was blessed with grandchildren: Michael, Lindsey and Spencer Johnson; Isaac Wall; Allie Westafer; Keegan, Chandler and Addyson Westafer; and Morgan Blackburn. Also surviving are a sister, Susan (Terry) Bon Durant, Bremen; a brother, Dave (Jeannie) Westafer, Dickson, Tenn.; his mother, Barbara Westafer, Bremen; and his best friend, Lewis Lindsey, Bourbon. He was preceded by his father, Eugene, in January 2002 and a brother, Dennis, in 2014. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour before services at 10 a.m. Friday in Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St. Bourbon.
