The driver of a van that rear-ended a semi tractor/trailer Friday morning on U.S. 30 had nearly five times the legal limit of alcohol in his system when the accident occurred.
According to a press release from the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, Melvin L. Stivers, 39, of Pierceton, had a blood-alcohol level of .396 percent. The maximum amount of alcohol for one not to be considered intoxicated in Indiana is .08 percent.
Stivers suffered multiple chest and internal injuries in the 8:32 a.m. accident on U.S. 30 at CR 250E. He is listed in serious condition at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Police received reports of an erratic driver prior to the collision. Stivers apparently also ran two red lights prior to the accident, according to witness reports. The driver of the semi rig was not injured.
Charges are pending against Stivers.
