Posted

An Akron man escaped serious injury Friday afternoon after his car was struck by a train at a CR 400S rail road crossing, east of Ind. 15, near Claypool.

A car driven by Robert L. McDonough, 33, Lakeshore Drive, Akron, drove across the tracks and was hit by a southbound Norfolk Southern train.

McDonough's car was dragged about one-quarter of a mile before the train was able to stop. He escaped the accident with only minor injuries and was treated and released at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.

Railroad officials said it was fortunate the train with was long. If the train had been shorter, it would have been traveling much faster.

McDonough told police he tried to brake before the collision, but an engineer aboard, said he saw no indication that McDonough used his brakes.

A rail road crossing sign marked the CR 400S crossing.

Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department investigated and estimated total damage at $5,000-$10,000.
