An accident Friday that claimed the life of an unidentified man is still under investigation by Kosciusko County authorities.
The one-vehicle crash occurred at 1:29 p.m. Friday just north of the Kosciusko County/Wabash County line on Ind. 15.
According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, a 1986 pickup truck registered to D.A. Melching & Associates Inc. of Warsaw, suddenly veered off the road, hit a tree head-on and caught on fire.
A witness, Mike Yentes of Wabash, was driving behind the truck. He stopped and tried to get the driver out of the truck, but was unable to help because of the flames.
The name of the pickup driver is being withheld. Kosciusko County Coroner Larry Ladd said late Friday the victim was burned beyond recognition and was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, Fort Wayne. Dental records will be used to make positive identification.
Investigating the accident along with the Sheriff's Department and the coroner's office were the Indiana State Police, South Central EMS, Silver Lake Fire Department, Chester Township Fire Department "Jaws of Life" Unit and Henry Township Fire Department.
