Two drains will be rerouted in the name of progress.
The Kosciusko County Drainage Board approved both of the petitions Thursday.
The first petition was by the Mentone Fire Department to reroute the Swick Meredith drain at the intersection of Ind. 19 and Walnut Street, Mentone. Currently, the drain cuts through the center of four lots where the fire department wants to eventually build a new building. The new route of the drain will be close to and parallel to Walnut and Jackson streets. The variance to reduce the easement of the drain from 75 feet to 25 feet also was approved.
Secondly, Warsaw City Planner Jeff Noffsinger, on behalf of Michael Arnoldt, presented a request to reroute the Beyer Brady drain, Warsaw. Arnoldt is the property owner on which the portion of the drain to be rerouted exists.
The drain is north of Meadowbrook Addition, near DuBois and Parker streets. The drain will be relocated from the existing channel through Arnoldt's property so it is straighter and parallel to the sanitary sewer line. Noffsinger said the shift is about 60 feet at its widest.
The city of Warsaw's new wastewater treatment plant is being built on the northwest side of town and Noffsinger said the interceptor lines need to divert flows from the old plant to the new plant, and this rerouting of the Beyer Brady drain will help.
County surveyor Dick Kemper recommended approval of the petition subject to Arnoldt filing the proper paperwork for a variance to reduce the easement from 75 feet to 25 feet as also requested, and that the rerouting project meet the specifications and restrictions of the county. The variance cannot be signed until the April 24 meeting.
Also at the April 24 meeting, the drainage board will hold hearings on the Nevin McConnell drain at 9 a.m. and the Walter Phillips drain at approximately 9:45 a.m.
