Drainage Board Approves Variance

Posted

A setback variance was the only business before the Kosciusko County Drainage Board today.

Jerolyn Stratton petitioned to locate a mobile home within 40 feet of the west side of Wyland Drain on the south side of Sellers Lake, East Channel Road.

Kosciusko County Surveyor Dick Kemper said the board previously approved two other variances for Stratton that she requested and he had no problem recommending approving this one. The board agreed and approved the variance request.

Stratton also wants to reclean the channel adjacent to the property. Kemper told the board they had met with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. On this channel, there is not a drainage problem, so Kemper said he could not recommend the drainage board throwing any money at it for a reclean since it's not a problem. However, Kemper said, they wouldn't have any objections to the reclean at the property owner's expense as long as it meets their criteria and that of the DNR and Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

"We would not be a roadblock to you," said Kemper.

After discussion on all the paperwork and hurdles Stratton will have to fill out and go through for the recleaning, Kosciusko County Commissioner and Drainage Board President Ron Truex said, "Twenty to 30 years from now, we might have enough common sense in government to get things done."

Members of the Drainage Board are Truex, Donald Goon, Dorris Harrold, Maurice McDaniel and Eldon Watkins. They meet at 9 a.m. on the fourth Thursday of every month in the Kosciusko County courthouse, Warsaw. Their next meeting is Jan. 27 at 9:30 a.m. in the Justice Building meeting room, where a hearing on the Armey Drain reconstruction will be held.
