Staff Report-
WABASH – The Honeywell House in Wabash will host a lecture at the Honeywell Center given by Wabash County native Dr. Steve Ahlfeld, former basketball superstar at Northfield High School and Indiana University, as well as longtime I.U. team physician. The evening will feature Ahlfeld sharing his recollections and experiences with the I.U. organization. The program takes place at 6 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Honeywell Center in Wabash and is made possible by the Martha Jones Memorial Program Fund. Corporate sponsor for the event is Bucheri McCarty & Metz LLP. After graduating from Northfield High School, Ahlfeld played basketball at I.U. under coach Bob Knight. While at I.U., Ahlfeld, who played guard, was a member of three consecutive Big Ten Championship Teams and lettered for the Hoosiers from 1972-75. Ahlfeld pursued a career in orthopedic medicine and currently is an orthopedic surgeon at Ahlfeld Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Center in Indianapolis. He also has spent most of his professional career as a team physician for the I.U. men’s basketball team. In 2006, Ahlfeld was inducted into the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame. In 2007, he received the distinguished Clevenger Award from I.U. a year later; Ahlfeld was named Team Physician of the Year by the Indiana State Medical Association. Also, in 1996, Ahlfeld was named to the I.U. Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary Team. Ahlfeld has served on a national panel of experts on the topic of basketball injuries presented by the American College of Sports Medicine. He also served as chief medical officer for the Pan American Games in Indianapolis. The Martha Jones Memorial Program Fund was established several years ago in memory of Martha Jones, a beloved teacher from Wabash High School, and also a close friend of Eugenia Honeywell, who worked tirelessly to promote Wabash and its residents. Jones served on the Honeywell House Board from 1994 to 2006, planning programs and helping oversee the redecorating of the house. The fund was established by members of the community to help the Honeywell House continue Jones’ work and the tradition of offering lectures and concerts to the public, free of charge. Past programs have included presentations by author Phil Gulley, a lecture about the Beatles by I.U. professor Glenn Gass and a concert by the I.U. men’s vocal group, Straight No Chaser. A reception will take place immediately following the lecture. The lecture and reception are free events, but reservations are required for the limited seating presentation. To make reservations, call 260-563-2326, Ext. 21. The Honeywell House is the former home of Mrs. Mark C. Honeywell and is now operated as a cultural house museum in Wabash. The house is owned and operated by the Honeywell Foundation, a non-profit organization that also operates the Honeywell Center and Eagles Theatre.
