NAPPANEE – Dr. James C. Zimmerman, DDC, 94, of Nappanee, died at 12:10 a.m. May 22, 2013, in Miller’s Merry Manor, Wakarusa, where he was ill since Christmas.
He was born May 8, 1919, in Fort Wayne, to Harry and Helen Weaver Zimmerman. On June 10, 1951, in Savannah, Mo., he married Dorothy L. Ritter, who survives.
A lifetime area resident, he graduated from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1943 and had a dental practice in Nappanee from 1946-90. He had also taken post-graduate courses at Tulane University and the University of Kentucky.
He was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving as a dentist with the combat engineers. He served in five European campaigns including the D-Day Invasion, Liberation of Paris and the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a former member of the Library Board of Directors, the Park Board and Masonic Lodge, all in Nappanee, and the South Bend Scottish Rite, and served many years with the Nappanee BZA. He was a member of Grace Point Presbyterian Church, Nappanee American Legion Post 154 and the Indiana Dental Society.
Also surviving are a son, Bruce (and spouse Wendy) Zimmerman, Hagerstown, Md.; a daughter, Jean M. (and spouse Henry) Barger, Fort Worth, Texas; four granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; and a brother,  Richard Zimmerman, Milwaukee, Wis.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Point Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Terry Tyler officiating. Burial will be in Leesburg Cemetery with military graveside services.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
