AKRON — Dr. Charles E. Miller, 78, Akron, died at 5:10 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2018, at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.
He was born Jan. 16, 1940, in Fulton County, to Dr. Virgil C. and Mae Fulton Miller. On Aug. 29, 1959, in Laketon, he was married to Marilyn S. Swygart. She survives.
He practiced dentistry in Akron from 1968 to 1981, later in South Whitley for 21 years and with PrimeSource Healthcare until January.
He graduated from Akron High School in 1958, then earned his B.A. in biology from Indiana University Bloomington in 1964. He attained his DDS degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1968.
Charles served on the Akron Town Board from 1969 to 1981. He also served on the Governor’s Advisory Council for Water and Mineral Resources from 1972 through 1982, receiving a Sagamore of the Wabash award from Gov. Robert Orr in 1982 recognizing this service.
He was a lifetime member of the American Dental Association and two-term president of the Kosciusko County Dental Society, as well as a member of Akron United Methodist Church and Akron Lions Club.
Charles served the community as past president of the Akron Park Board. He and many others helped establish the Emergency Medical Service in Akron. He was a member of Rock Lake Conservation Club for many decades, working for the betterment of Rock Lake and its watershed. He was an Eagle Scout.
He worked closely with Pike Lumber Co. of Akron for over 30 years. Through his company, Miller Forestry Services, he provided timber stand improvement services, helping landowners manage and maintain thousands of acres of forestland and overseeing the planting of hundreds of thousands of hardwood seedlings throughout northcentral Indiana.
He had been a friend of Bill Wilson for 37 years.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Marilyn Miller, Akron; daughter, Sherri (husband Jeff) Johnson, Warsaw; son, Dr. Scott (wife Kelly) Miller, New Palestine; grandchildren: Erin Anglin, Alyssa (husband Jake) Moore, Carli (husband Matt) Kaiser, Lauren Miller, Kara Miller and Ryan Miller; great-grandchildren: Maclain Tucker, Tessa Kaiser and Madelyn Moore; sister, Dorothy Rose (husband Mitchell) Leavell, Brandon, Miss.; four nephews; and three nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 7, with visitation one hour prior, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron. Pastor David Arnold will officiate, and burial will be in Akron Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 6 at Hartzler Funeral Home.
