Children will have the opportunity to trick-or-treat and participate in a costume contest in downtown Warsaw Friday night.

More than 1,000 children attended last year's Downtown Spooktakular, according to WCDC Executive Director Carmen Locke.

"This Halloween event is designed to be a safe time for children to have the opportunity to celebrate Halloween," Locke said.

Warsaw Community Development Corp. is teaming up with Miller's Merry Manor to host its annual Halloween Spooktakular.

Children ages 12 and under who register for the costume contest will be given goody bags at the event.

Costume contest registration will be held from 5:30 to 6 p.m. at the courthouse lawn, and judging will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the courthouse tent.

The contest will include five age categories with three first-place and three second-place winners in each category and a best costume overall winner.

Trick-or-treating also will be held from 6 to 7 p.m.

Downtown businesses will distribute candy to trick-or-treaters outside their businesses.

Downtown Spooktakular is sponsored by Warsaw Community Development Corp., Miller's Merry Manor, the Warsaw Breakfast Optimist Club, Zimmer, National City Bank and downtown merchants.

The following streets will be closed for the Downtown Halloween Spooktakular beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday: Center Street from Lake street to Indiana and Buffalo Streets, the parking lot on South Buffalo Street to Main Street, and Market Street from Lake to Indiana Streets. Trick-or-treating will be held from 6 to 7 p.m.
