Downtown Parking Better Than Perceived

Posted

Warsaw City Council was told Monday that downtown parking is more available than what the public often perceives.

"We're sensitive to the downtown parking situation," Mayor Ernie Wiggins said. "We've taken quite a few cars off the street and put them in the city lots. That may be causing some more problems but we are looking into it."

The mayor's comments were in reaction to several letters sent to his office and to a letter to the editor in the Aug. 31 edition of the Times-Union criticizing the city for leasing parking spaces in parking lots donated to the city for the purpose of providing free parking to downtown shoppers.

In other business, the council approved a transfer request of $15,000 by the park board from salaries and wages, unemployment and repairs and maintenance accounts into the operating supplies account. The council also approved a $500 transfer from professional services account to the communication and transportation account.

The council also approved two transfer requests by the Warsaw Fire Department. The first was an $11,000 transfer from the salary and wages account to the repairs and maintenance accounts for a new roof on Station Two. An $8,000 transfer was also approved to pay for maintenance contract repair costs on department vehicles.

"Kenny Shepherd says he doesn't believe the roof repair will come in as high as $11,000 - that it may be as low as $6,000, but this will cover the higher cost if necessary," Wiggins said.

The council approved the transferring the cable franchise rights from Marcus Cable to Vulcan Cable Inc. Vulcan acquired Marcus Cable Aug. 27.

The council waived the $10 demolition fee for the Warsaw Community Public Library on the demolition of the Christian Science building at Detroit and Main streets.

The council also approved extending a tax abatement for DePuy on the company's 17,600- square-foot expansion of its manufacturing facility at 700 Orthopaedic Drive.
