If you want something free, fun and family-oriented to do this weekend, then downtown Warsaw is the place to be.
Sponsored by the downtown merchants, Warsaw Downtown Days starts with sidewalk sales Friday morning. A fish tent next to the courthouse will sell fish sandwiches and fried clams from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and proceeds will benefit the YMCA swim club.
At 5:30 p.m. Friday the free two-hour watermelon feast begins, and at 6 p.m. the classic car cruise-in will start and there will be a concert in Central Park.
A street dance with the "Babalooeys" is scheduled for 7 to 10 p.m. Friday.
Festivities will continue Saturday morning with a three-on-three basketball tournament, sidewalk sales and the fish tent. The classic car contest and show are scheduled for noon to 4 p.m., with prizes in six categories given out at 4 p.m.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the "bungee run," a new form of entertainment, will be available, and at 3 p.m. the Hula Hoop contest, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe look-alike contest, and the poodle skirt dance contest will be held.
The street dance on Saturday will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with a free concert in Central Park featuring the Christian band "Truth."
Building on the successful downtown holiday celebration last winter, Warsaw Downtown Days promotes downtown businesses while offering residents free fun and entertainment.
"People should at least come downtown and check it out," said event organizer Jim Brennan.
