Don’t Drive Drunk

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

I read in the Oct. 18 Times-Union the heartwrenching account of the Conrad family – the senseless killing by a 27-year-old drunken man of a beloved mother and son on a county road in Syracuse.

The exact circumstances reminds me (lest we forget) of Mary Ellen Jordan – architect, friend, optimist and community leader – who, when returning from business in Wabash County on afternoon, met a man crazed out of his mind with drugs, driving a lethal weapon, at high speed, on the wrong side of the road, on the crest of a hill, who struck and killed her instantly.

I wonder in the Conrad story if there are others bearing responsibility for this tragedy.

Were there friends, family or neighbors who knew of Mr. Hisey’s “sickness” and did nothing to stop him from driving to a convenience store to buy a pack of smokes – blood alcohol content 0.12 percent at holiday time (Christmas)?

You hear the radio appeal: “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk.”
