Like Cinderella who just wanted to go to the ball, high school students may look forward to their prom but not have the dress, tuxedo or accessories. If only a fairy godmother would wave her magic wand... In the absence of a little fairy dust, Combined Community Services, with support from the community and two high school volunteers, has provided the magic to make prom dreams come true since 2009. “The Glass Slipper is a prom drive to get dresses for girls who can’t otherwise afford to go to prom. We try to help out as much as we can, from a meal to a dress and accessories and potentially a tuxedo for guys,” said Cailin Clay, a Warsaw Community High School junior, who is organizing this year’s drive with WCHS sophomore MegAnn Pearl. Peggi Lisenbee-Wright, CCS director of client assistance, said the number of tuxedos available will depend on the monetary donations received. The goal is to raise at least $1,000 for the tuxedos, Clay said. Clay said she’s contacted restaurants for meal donations, but more would be nice. Donations also are needed for dress alterations. While The Glass Slipper has some dresses, she said more would be appreciated to provide high school girls with options. “We really need dresses of all sizes,” said Lisenbee-Wright. Clay said dress and accessory donations may be dropped off at WCHS or CCS. Monetary donations may be delivered to CCS. If writing a check to CCS, put “The Glass Slipper” in the memo line. Lisenbee-Wright said people also can watch the CCS Facebook page for more options on how to give soon. Also needed, Clay said, are people who will volunteer to do hair and makeup for prom or free alterations to the dresses. “If you don’t have a dress or money to give, volunteer to help set up,” said Pearl. Lisenbee-Wright said anyone with questions or who wants to volunteer can email her at pwright@combinedcommunityservices.org or Clay at cailinclay97@gmail.com Forms for any girl in Kosciusko County to sign up are at WCHS or CCS. The deadline is April 13. Girls will try on the dresses at CCS, 1195 Mariners Drive, Warsaw, April 18. Clay said there will be two intervals with the first one from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the second from 5 to 8 p.m. Clay said if anyone wanted to bake cupcakes or bring in food for the April 18 dress fittings, that would be appreciated. The Glass Slipper was started by Katy Cobb and Alexis Light when they were students at WCHS in 2009. As they graduated high school, they passed on the annual responsibility of organizing the event to another high school girl or two, making sure the fairy tale stays alive for others.
