NORTH MANCHESTER – Donald Thomas Stone, 92, of North Manchester, died at 6:05 a.m. July 5, 2011, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

He was born Jan. 22, 1919, in Lagro, to Thomas Henry and Laura Etta Troxel Stone. On May 27, 1951, he married Marilyn Jean Kintner, who survives.

He retired in 1986 from Peru Community Schools after 28 years as head of the math department. Prior to that he taught at Bunker Hill High School and various other high schools during his 42-year teaching career. He also spent several years as a salesman in the Indianapolis area for Standard Oil. He served in the U.S. Army-Air Corp from 1941-45, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Service Medal. He was a member of Manchester Church of the Brethren. He graduated from Lagro High School in 1937, attended Manchester College from 1938-41, graduated from Manchester College in 1947 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and earned a master’s degree in education from Purdue University. He was a member of Peru Lions Club, Wabash County Retired Teachers Association, North Manchester Historical Society, Wabash County Genealogical Society and the 8th Air Force 487 Bomb Group Historical Society. He was a former member of Peru Church of the Brethren, where he served as treasurer and deacon for 24 years.

Surviving are two sons, Karl (and spouse Elaine) Stone, Gettysburg, Pa., and Jon (and spouse Sandra) Stone, Emerald Island, N.C.; four daughters: Beverly (and spouse Charles) Malooley, Bloomington; Kathryn (and spouse Charles) McCarty, Avon; Edith Stone, North Manchester; and Jill (and spouse Richard) Spenner, Roanoke; two sisters, Ruth Ellen Stone, North Manchester, and Emmalou (and spouse Robert) Rice, Lagro; and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, two brothers and a sister.

 Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Manchester Church of the Brethren with Pastor Karen Eberly and the Rev. Joan Deeter officiating. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery, Lagro.

Calling is from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.
