LEESBURG – A Columbia City man was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital after being shot by his grandfather during a dispute Sunday near Leesburg.
Colby Kuczewski, 20, Columbia City, was taken to Lutheran Hospital Fort Wayne for treatment for a leg injury and was listed in serious condition after the incident.
Katheryn Wilcox, also 20 and from Columbia City, was treated for minor injuries at Parkview Hospital in Warsaw and later released.
According to a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department news release, at about 5:16 p.m. Sunday the KCSD received a report of a domestic dispute at the Leesburg gravel pit south of School Street and east of Ind. 15 in Leesburg.
Colby Kuczewski and Wilcox were arguing when the vehicle they were traveling in became stuck in the gravel pit and family members arrived to assist.
Buddy Kuczewski, Colby’s grandfather, 70, Leesburg, arrived to help with the vehicle. Once he arrive at the gravel pit, the dispute continued to escalate.
Colby Kuczewski then entered into physical altercations with multiple people at the gravel pit.
During the altercation, Colby Kuczewski took a knife from Buddy Kuczewski and made threats to harm himself and several other people at the gravel pit.
Buddy Kuczewski then retrieved a 357 revolver and shot Colby Kuczewski in the left upper leg, according to police.
Information from this case has been forwarded to the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office for possible charges.
