DNR Discusses River Access Road In South Whitley

Posted

SOUTH WHITLEY - A public access road to the Eel River can be established by the Department of Natural Resources. However, the town council would prefer the road be to the west of town hall, and not to the east.

DNR representative Ted Leverman attended the Tuesday meeting of the town council and discussed leasing the park property. The DNR plans to build a boat ramp along the river.

The state department initially proposed leasing the access road between the fire station and town hall. This road is traditionally blocked for Fall Festival events.

Larry Reynolds, from the South Whitley Planning and Zoning Board, discussed the possibility of renovating the Morsches Building.

Reynolds recently has been named building inspector for the town. He and town council member Tom Rudd spoke with Lisa Gilman and Greg Kil recently. Gilman is a preservation consultant and Kil is an architect. Both have have been instrumental in renovating the Clugston Hotel in Columbia City.

Cleveland Township Trustee Ron King and Cleveland Township-South Whitley Fire Department Chief Tom Warner attended the meeting to discuss who owns what percent of the real estate, equipment and vehicles.

In other news the council:

• Heard from town marshal Dave Wilkinson regarding purchase of a new police department vehicle, which was ordered Jan. 31.

• Made a recommendation to appoint Ron King to the county plan commission.

• Heard from Dorinda Heiden and Darryl Norris of the Whitley County Economic Development Corp., who gave an annual report and outlined plans for 2000.

Besides Rudd, town council members are Tony Starkey and Judy Earnhart. The next town council meeting is Feb. 22 in town hall.
