DiscoverMe Teaches Eighth-Graders About ManufacturingStudents at Lakeview and Edgewood middle schools recently had the opportunity to expand their understanding of manufacturing careers through OrthoWorx’s event, “DiscoverME.”

The event gave all area eighth-grade students a chance to learn about the benefits of careers with local manufacturers, as well as to see training centers that can help them prepare for those careers.

The event took place the first week of October during National Manufacturing Week.

During the DiscoverME event, 20 guest speakers from local companies visited classrooms and introduced modern manufacturing – highlighting science, technology and the varied careers available in the industry.

The event was implemented in all six area middle schools, two of which are within the Warsaw Community Schools district, according to a news release from WCS.

Additionally, OrthoWorx collaborated with schools’ local career centers, which includes the Warsaw Area Career Center and Wawasee Area Career Center and Technical Center as well as Ivy Tech’s Orthopedic and Advanced Manufacturing Training Center. All participating students, more than 1,000 in total, visited Ivy Tech’s Training Center, its local career center and then either DePuy Synthes, Medtronic, Precision Medical Technologies, Paragon Medical, Zimmer Biomet or Polywood. Lakeview students visited Medtronic or Zimmer Biomet and Edgewood visited DePuy Synthes or Precision Medical Technologies.

“There is an immediate need for a skilled workforce as well as a need to understand modern manufacturing,” said Nichole Rouached, OrthoWorx communications and projects manager.

“Exploring modern manufacturing through both in-class curriculum and a field trip, DiscoverME uncovers common misconceptions students and even the community may have about manufacturing. Additionally, it emphasizes the various fields (design, machining, programming, engineering, etc.) that are involved in the manufacturing process, showing the depth of local career opportunities.”
