Detroit Street Project Unaffected by Strike

The project to replace the water main on Detroit Street that began in May is on schedule to be completed by the end of August.

Chris Harrison, Indiana American Water operations superintendent, said the project is not being affected by the Local 150 strike.

“Indiana American Water is taking measures to keep the project going,” Harrison said.

He said people driving by may see equipment being stagnant and there is a reason why.

“Anytime you do a replacement main project there is a delay period before you can move onto the next phase,” Harrison said.

Currently, there are pressure and bacteria tests being conducted on the main.

Once the pressure and bacteria tests pass this week, workers will then provide replacement services on the new 16-inch water main.

The project includes installing a 16-inch water main and abondoning a six-inch and 10-inch water main that are more than 100 years old.

The Detroit Street project is being contracted by Woodruff and Sons, and the expected completion date is the end of August, Harrison said.

“We need the main in service to start up the new water treatment plant this fall that is being located in Hidden Lake across from Lowes,” Harrison said.

Harrison said the 16- inch water main was installed last week, and there are requirements by Indiana Department of Environmental Management for pressure and bacteria tests on the water main.

There is a 20-inch water main being installed on Hidden Lake Drive as well, and the new water treatment plant is being built with an end service date of September 30.

The Local 150 strike is still holding up the Center Street project as well as the Lake Street at Fox Farm Road reconstruction roundabout, and work at the intersection of Ind. 15 (Fisher Avenue) and CR 100S (Rozella Road) improvements also are delayed.
