DePuy Orthopaedics Inc., a Johnson & Johnson Co., is investing $700,000 to foster diversity and innovation in orthopedics.
DePuy has partnered with the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society to provide scholarship and research grants. The Gladden Society's objective is to increase diversity in the orthopedic profession and to eliminate inequalities in health care for minorities. Members of DePuy's management team met Monday with representatives of the Gladden Society to review the details of the grants.
Richard Tarr, vice president worldwide research and orthobiologics for DePuy said, "Partnering with the Gladden Society and other surgeon groups aligns well with the DePuy vision of transforming orthopedic care."
A $350,000 grant will fund the DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. Engineer/Physician Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will train a medical student to be dually capable in performing scientific research in orthopedic surgery as well as treating patients in a clinical setting. The student will commit to a seven-year M.D. and Ph.D. collaborative program at the Indiana University School of Medicine and the Purdue University Department of Biomedical Engineering.
"Our goal in providing this support is to train a leader in both the scientific research and clinical treatment arenas of orthopedic surgery, with special emphasis in total joint surgery or trauma," Tarr said. Minority students are encouraged to apply for the award. The student will be selected by members of the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society. A candidate will be chosen to begin studies in fall 2005.
An additional $350,000 allotment will fund DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. Engineer/Physician Research Grants for engineering research in orthopedic surgery. The principal or co-principal investigator must be an orthopedic surgeon. These grants encourage innovation by providing funding of up to $50,000 per year for up to two years. Minority surgeons are encouraged to apply; recipients will be selected by members of the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society.
