Democrat Morales Files For County Council At-Large SeatPaul Morales filed Wednesday to run as a democratic candidate for the Kosciusko County Council.
Morales, 31, has lived in Warsaw for 12 years after moving here from Los Angeles to attend Grace College. He earned a bachelor’s degree in communication and a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling.
Morales, who identified himself at last week’s Black Lives Matter demonstration as having a Hispanic background, said it was that movement that made him want to run.
“I had the opportunity to speak and one thing I saw was a voice rising up in our communities from young people, minorities, and they want to have their voices heard,” Morales said. He said he also went to a county council meeting recently and realized there wasn’t really any diversity sitting on the council.
“I don’t think any government body can represent their entire community without having some diversity,” he said.
The Republican candidates for the three council at-large seats are incumbent Sue Ann Mitchell, incumbent Joni Truex and Kathy Groninger. They had the most votes in the June 2 Republican primary to move on to the November general election.
Five years ago, Morales founded and runs a Warsaw-based nonprofit called Not Easily Broken. It’s a counseling service for free or low cost that provides relationship skills training.
“I’m excited to run and excited to serve and to highlight the service aspect of the council,” Morales said. “I definitely want to reach out. It will be me going to them, instead of inviting them to come to me,” he said of interacting with his constituents.
Morales lives in Warsaw with his wife and two daughters.
Anyone who would like to reach him can find him on Facebook, he said.
