Deer Task Force To Discuss Another Reduction Effort

Posted
Warsaw Deer Task Force will meet Tuesday night to discuss another proposed deer-reduction effort and the possibility of expanding nuisance zones within the city limits.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at city hall.

"The task force was pleased with the past two year's deer-reduction efforts, and will discuss a proposed hunt for this year," said Jeff Grose, deer task force chair. The mission of the task force is to reduce and maintain the population of deer in designated nuisance zones in Warsaw.

Warsaw City Council will need to approve the proposed reduction effort and expansion zones the task force selects.

If the city council approves the efforts, it will be the third year for the hunt.

The city council first approved an ordinance and resolution in November 2006 for a deer-reduction effort and declared nuisance zones. There were 18 deer harvested during the first year's three-week hunt from Dec. 18 through Jan. 8, 2006.

There were 39 deer harvested during last year's efforts that went from Oct. 1 to Jan. 6.

Trained bow-hunting archers hunted in the declared nuisance zones within the Warsaw city limits, including the entire area around Spring Hill, Oakwood Cemetery, Kosciusko Community Hospital and U.S. 30.

The task force will review its current application form for archers interested in applying for the efforts. They also will set a date, time and location for a training session for the archers, Grose said.

Task force members are Mayor Ernie Wiggins, Warsaw Police Chief Perry Hunter, Grose, Matt Dick, Jon Cook, Joe Thallemer, George Clemens, Steve Foster, Dan Smith and Randy Denney.
