Dean R. Dowty

MILFORD – Dean R. Dowty, 84, of Syracuse, passed away March 26, 2012, at I.U. Health Goshen Hospital.

He was born March 8, 1928, in Middlebury, to Virgil and Mary Bloss Dowty. On Nov. 29, 1952, he married Maryann Doty, who died Aug. 18, 2001.

He and his family moved to Syracuse in 1958. He retired from Dana in 1985 after 35-1/2 years and later retired from working on the family farm after 50 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post 226, Milford, and Bethany Church of the Brethren.

Surviving are three sons: Larry Dowty, Milford; Ed Dowty, Syracuse; and Phil (and spouse Melissa) Dowty, Goshen; a daughter, Rita (and spouse Dale) Currier-Ultz, Burr Oak, Mich.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Vernon Dowty, Ossian; a sister, Mary Ellen Stump, Goshen; and his special friend,  Inge Mathews, Milford. He also was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Cherie Gall and Lois Hunsberger.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethany Church of the Brethren with Pastor Timothy Sollenberger-Morphew officiating. Burial will be in Milford Cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mishler Funeral Home, Milford, and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
