Day Of Caring Set Wednesday

Posted
Thousands of volunteers will spend Wednesday making repairs to hundreds of homes in Kosciusko County.

It is the sixth year for the United Way Day of Caring. The project is organized by United Way of Kosciusko County, Housing Opportunities of Warsaw, Kosciusko Senior Services and Grace College.

There will be home improvements made to 124 homes in Kosciusko County, according to Pam Kennedy, HOW executive director.

Homes that will receive renovations are in Warsaw, Winona Lake, Syracuse, North Webster, Burket, Claypool, Pierceton, Silver Lake, Leesburg and Mentone.

The first year started with four homes being repaired and has grown.

Families who receive home repairs sign up at senior centers, churches and are referred by service organizations and service providers in the county, Kennedy said.

The scope of projects range from washing windows to fixing roofs. Carpenters will have teams to build 18 handicapped ramps for seniors and families with disabilities.

Volunteers spend the day getting to know the families they help, and local churches and service organizations will feed volunteers lunch in the different communities.

A closing ceremony will be Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Winona Lake Amphitheater. Volunteers and homeowners will have the opportunity to share their experiences from the day.
