David George Sanborn, 81, of Winona Lake, made his way to Heaven at 2:10 a.m. April 14, 2009, in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.
He was born April 17, 1927, in Ferndale, Mich., to Glen Milton and Mary Eleanor Steere Sanborn. On Aug. 21, 1954, in Ypsilanti, Mich., he married Cynthia Joan Stralnic, who survives.
He dedicated his life to the influence of young people in many ways. He was a public school music teacher for nearly 40 years at Chelsea (Mich.) High School and Lakeview High School, St. Clair Shores, Mich, and taught preschool music for various Montessori schools near Detroit after his retirement.
Moving to Winona Lake from St. Clair Shores, Mich., he was a member of Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, Calvary Baptist Church, Roseville, Mich., and Bethany Baptist Church, Clinton Township, Mich., where he served as deacon. Other memberships include Gideon's International, Civil Air Patrol, Voice of Christian Youth ministry, Orff-Schulwerk Association and Michigan School Vocal Association. Very active musically, he played string bass and tuba in the St. Clair Shores Symphony, with many Detroit area groups and most recently for the Grace Community Wind Ensemble, Winona Lake. He volunteered at Jefferson Elementary School, Winona Lake.
Also surviving are two sons, Tim (and spouse Ruth) Sanborn, Winona Lake, and David (and spouse Cathy) Sanborn, Keystone Heights, Fla.; two daughters, Nancy Kilpatrick, York, Maine, and Beth Sanborn, Plymouth, Mich.; five grandchildren: Benjamin and Michael Sanborn, both of Winona Lake; Joel (and spouse Stacey) Kilpatrick, Northville, Mich.; Daniel (and spouse Laura) Kilpatrick, Loma Linda, Calif.; and Andrew Kilpatrick, York; and a great-grandson, Lukas Kilpatrick, Northville. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Alice Hayes and Betty Higgins.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church officiated by Pastor Bruce Barlow of the church, and at 4 p.m. Sunday at Bethany Baptist Church, Clinton Township, Mich., officiated by Pastor Bob Harvey of the church.
Calling is one hour prior to the service Friday at Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church and one hour prior to the service Sunday at Bethany Baptist Church.
Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, is in charge of arrangements.
