The Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is the Kosciusko County sponsor of the yearly National Society Daughters of the American Revolution history essay contests.
All students in fifth through 12th grades in public, private, parochial and home schools in Kosciusko County are eligible, according to a news release from DAR.
The contest was established to encourage young people to think creatively about the nation’s history and learn about history in a new light, stated the release. Each academic year, a new essay topic is chosen and guidelines are made available.
March 5 marked the 250th anniversary of the Boston Massacre, considered to be a pivotal event that paved the way to the American Revolution. Students are asked to imagine they are living in Boston and, after witnessing the event of March 5, describe your family’s discussion about the Boston Massacre and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British king and Parliament.
The 2020-2021 American History Essay Contest title for students in fifth through eigth grades is “The Boston Massacre.” Essay lengths range from a minimum of 300 to a maximum of 1,000 words depending on grade. Essay deadline is Nov. 23.
