DAR Announces Citizens AwardsThe Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced the DAR Good Citizen Awards.

Four high schools in Kosciusko County are eligible to each choose one senior who exemplifies the four qualities of dependability (which includes truthfulness, honesty and punctuality), service (which includes cooperation, helpfulness and responsibility), leadership (which includes personality, self-control and initiative) and patriotism (which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation) to an outstanding degree.

The students then may elect to participate in the DAR Good Citizen Scholarship contest. The student must list high school and extracurricular activities, including offices held and awards; must describe how efforts to serve his/her community has been effective or made a difference; express future plans and aspirations; and describe why he/she feels the above four qualities are important and how he/she tries to exhibit these qualities in relationship with others and in his/her own life.  The student must also submit a high school grade transcript, two letters of recommendations and write an essay.

The essay is timed and completed in one sitting without assistance or reference materials. The essay title for this year was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It” with the focus question of “How has America advanced the cause of freedom in the rest of the world?”

All of the information and essays submitted by the students are evaluated by independent, non-DAR judges.

The DAR Good Citizens were guests of honor at the chapter’s March meeting.

Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter congratulates the following: Kelsey Justice, representing Tippecanoe Valley High School; Grace Miller, representing Warsaw Community High School; and Clayton Hicks, representing Wawasee High School.  Hicks’ submissions were selected by judges to receive the chapter DAR Good Citizen Scholarship and to represent the chapter at the Indiana DAR Good Citizen and Scholarship Contest.
