EVANSVILLE – Curtis C. Johnson, 99, Evansville and formerly of Warsaw, passed away Aug. 24, 2013. He was born in Morehead, Ky., in 1914. He was married for 77 years to his wife, Erna McBrayer Johnson, who survives. By age 12 he was driving a Model T Ford ice truck for Highly Ice Company. He graduated from Middletown High School in 1933 as number one in the state in biology scholarship and was the winner of the Foundation in Industrial Arts Award as well as the Oglesby Barns Award for outstanding citizenship. His career included the Atomic Bomb project and construction and supervision of the first transcontinental natural gas pipeline in the United States. Along with his family, he lived and worked in most of the states east of the Mississippi. His skill base ranged from the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment to the intricacies of antique clock repair. All that knew him remember his humor and will not forget his deep faith in the Lord. He was an accomplished guitarist, story teller, Bible teacher and beloved father and grandfather. Also surviving are daughters, Roberta Collins (and spouse Ronald) Thomas, New Castle, and Janet (and spouse Keith) Krietenstein, Evansville; a son, Vernon (and spouse Nancy) Johnson, Claypool; eight grandsons; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings. His family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. William Hardesty for his dedication and compassion through the years.
