Crooks Sentence Postponed

Posted

Sentencing of Kristina Crooks has been delayed until March 5.

Crooks' attorney sought a delay Friday and the request was granted by Kosciusko Circuit Court Judge Rex Reed.

Sentencing had been set for today.

Crooks was convicted last month on three charges in connection with the death of her 11-month old baby, Lois Ozenbaugh.

Crooks' attorney requested the delay so she can remain involved in the process of finding permanent homes for her two children. The 20-year old woman has been free on bond since being convicted of neglect causing serious bodily injury, reckless homicide and neglect.

Prosecutor David Kolbe said he opposed the request, but chose not to argue vehemently against it.

Such delays are not that uncommon, he said.

Crooks is facing a maximum of 20 years. Kolbe said he will seek more than the standard 10 years on the charge of neglect causing serious bodily injury because of aggravating circumstances.

Lois Ozenbaugh died Jan. 24, 1996, after ingesting several cigarettes. The trial drew regional coverage after some residents began a "Justice For Lois" campaign prior to the trial.
