Posted
The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department and Coroner’s Office have positively identified the juvenile that was killed this morning by a westbound CSX freight train in the northeast corner of the county.

Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office Deputy Coroner Mike Wilson and KCSD detectives identified the juvenile victim as Kalee Nicole Skaggs, 15, Cromwell. Skaggs was a freshman at Wawasee High School, Syracuse.

KCSD deputies, along with emergency personnel from Syracuse, responded early today at 2:40 a.m. after receiving information that a CSX train had struck a pedestrian near the county line road. Skaggs was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma, according to Wilson.

The KCSD and Coroner’s Office do not have a final determination and are still investigating the fatality.

Skaggs was reportedly walking across the CSX railroad crossing on CR 1000N, just south of CR 1250 prior to being struck by the train.
