Crashes Blamed On Icy Roads

Although it is late in the season, winter is not ready to give up its hold over the area quite yet.

Icy weather this morning caused several accidents, and an incoming weather system could cause more over the next few days.

Between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. today, at least 14 ice-related accidents were reported to Kosciusko County Dispatchers. Officers from both the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department and the Warsaw Police Department were busy responding to numerous rollovers and slide-offs.

Conditions are expected to deteriorate later today and through Tuesday.

According to Chris Wamsley of the National Weather Service in North Webster, the Warsaw area could see snow accumulations between 7 and 15 inches by Wednesday morning.

"We are expecting 1 to 2 inches by this evening," said Wamsley, "and tonight add 2 to 5 more inches."

Tuesday morning is expected to be breezy with blowing snow and accumulations of 2 to 4 more inches. The snow should continue through Tuesday night when 1 to 4 inches are expected.

"There could be 4 to 9 inches by Tuesday morning, 6 to 11 inches by Tuesday night and 7 to 15 inches by Wednesday morning," said Wamsley.

"The snow will accumulate over time," said Wamsley. "It should not accumulate quickly, but it will accumulate."

Ice also will be a factor later this afternoon.

"Any wet ground will freeze later today," said Wamsley. "Snow will fall and melt early but will begin to accumulate this afternoon. There will probably be a layer of ice below the snow."

Areas north of U.S. 30 will probably see more snow than areas south of U.S. 30.

"Winds off the lake will cause west to northwest blowing," said Wamsley. "There will be heavier accumulations north of U.S. 30, and there will be significantly more snow in area closer to the lake like Berrien County."

Wamsley also had a bit of advice for people who must travel when weather conditions are not favorable.

"Expect delays and leave plenty of time to get where you need to go," said Wamsley. "Leave plenty of room between cars when you are driving."

Wamsley also added, "If you need to get things done, get them done today. Tomorrow the winds will pick up and there will be blowing and drifting snow."
