A Warsaw man is dead after a two-vehicle collision Wednesday night on U.S. 30, east of Warsaw.
Leon L. Robinson, 58, of Willow Lane, Warsaw, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 9:36 p.m. accident east of CR 325. Kosciusko County Coroner Larry Ladd ruled that Robinson suffered blunt traumatic injuries.
According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, Robinson's pickup struck the rear of a semi tractor/trailer driven by Dale A. Moran, 52, of Pas Christian, Miss. Moran was westbound on U.S. 30, having just pulled out from the access road to Safe-Way Door, when the accident occurred.
Police said Robinson did not brake or swerve until just prior to impact with the trailer of Moran's rig. A witness traveling eastbound told investigators that she saw Moran's rig moving slowing in the right lane and other semis passing it in the left lane before she saw glass and tires "flying out from behind the semi."
Tresa Graff of Larwill told police she turned around and saw the pickup stuck and dragging from the back of the semi. When she reached the scene, the two vehicles had separated.
Moran told police he saw Robinson's vehicle when he entered the highway but thought the pickup was a safe distance away. Robinson's pickup apparently approached Moran's rig quickly and Moran said he believed Robinson made no attempt to slow down before impact. Moran said he was in third gear when the accident occurred.
The accident remains under investigation pending results of blood tests from both drivers, and inspection reports from Indiana State Police Motor Carrier Division.
Assisting at the scene were Warsaw Fire Department, Multi-Township Emergency Medical Service and Pierceton Police Department.
