In less than 15 minutes, the Kosciusko County Council conducted all its business, including approving Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District's request for a tax rate increase.
The increase adds $80,000 to the district's budget. Every town council and the county council had to approve the increase for it to be accepted. As of the council meeting, all but two towns had heard the proposal for the tax levy increase and approved it.
John Kinsey, county councilman and council representative to the district board said, "I think it's imperative we support this. All the towns have come on board for this. It will allow the district to function." He made the motion to approve it.
Ron Truex, county commissioner, told the council even though it will raise an additional $80,000 for the district, that is still $20,000 less than the district cut out of its budget about two years ago.
Six of the seven county council members approved the increase with council vice chairman Tom Anglin abstaining.
The council then voted to keep the Economic Development Income Tax and the County Option Income Tax at the same rates at $0.003 and $0.007 respectively.
An additional appropriation for the county highway department was approved for $150,000 for the purchase of a loader.
The council also approved to add insurance proceeds back to the county highway department's budget for amounts of $3,202.04 and $2,562.50.
Larry Teghtmeyer, county councilman, told the council the next meeting on the Western Route Project will be April 29 at 7 p.m. in the Justice Building multi-purpose room.
Members of the council are chairman Harold Jones, Anglin, Kinsey, Charlene Knispel, Teghtmeyer, Maurice Beer and Brad Tandy. They regularly meet at 7 p.m. in the county courthouse, Warsaw, on the second Thursday of every month.
