On Sept. 14, Warsaw Police officer Kelly Bradley responded to a domestic battery complaint at Haines’ apartment. He spoke with Prater, who said she and her boyfriend, Haines, were having a disagreement when she asked him to leave the apartment or at least sleep on the couch. Haines refused to leave and put his arm around Prater, at which time Prater hit Haines, according to court documents. He then grabbed her by the neck and squeezed to the point she could no longer breathe.
Prater said a female child was crying so she attempted to feed her when Haines smacked the bottle out of Prater’s hand. He grabbed her by the arm, pushed her against the wall, hit her twice on the face and choked her for a second time.
Another police officer talked with Haines, who said that while he was sleeping, Prater smacked him on the face three times, causing him to push her away. When Prater told Haines he was not going to see his daughter anymore, he punched a hole in the bathroom door.
The officer spoke with Haines’ mother, who said that by the time she arrived, she only witnessed a lot of name calling. She also said that while Prater was on the telephone with one of her parents, she heard Prater say Haines had choked her.
Prater’s and Haines’ daughter was in the residence when Haines choked Prater and Prater hit Haines.
A no-contact order was entered on Sept. 27.
