FORT WAYNE - Kosciusko County Spelling Bee Champion Tim Ahlersmeyer finished third in the 54th Annual Spelling Bee Area Finals Saturday at Anthis Career Center, Fort Wayne.
The spelling bee was sponsored by The Journal Gazette and Touchstone Energy® Cooperatives of northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio, including Kosciusko REMC.
Kosciusko REMC Manager of Marketing and Communications Doris Lemert and Journal Gazette Managing Editor Tom Germuska presented awards to the regional winner and finalists following the completion of the bee.Ahlersmeyer, the son of Shelley and David Ahlersmeyer, Warsaw, is a 13-year-old seventh-grade student at Edgewood Middle School. He defeated Anna Bearrs at the Kosciusko County Bee Feb. 18 at Kosciusko REMC to advance to the regional finals.
Ahlersmeyer went out in the 17th round with his misspelling of "decorticate," which he spelled as "decordicate." The remaining two spellers, Gretchen Meinzen, the Whitley County champion, and Serene Macaraig, the Allen County champion, continued spelling for seven more rounds. Macaraig correctly spelled "ibuprofen" in the 24th round to win the championship.
