County Waste District Hires New Educator

Posted

Bendy Mann was introduced as educator for the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District during Monday's board of directors' meeting. Her first day of work was Monday.

Executive director Sue Studebaker said she received 19 resumes to fill the vacancy left by Eric Sanson.

"The applicants varied," Studebaker said, "but one thing stood out. A good share of them had good, high paying jobs at area companies. They were looking for a job where they 'could make a difference' or 'had a purpose.' The dollar amount wasn't as important as the purpose of the job. That is a new attitude."

Studebaker spent much of last month attending town council meetings, presenting a resolution to increase the district's tax levy. Approved by all towns and the county council, a condition of the increase, the district will receive an additonal $80,000 next year.

"Several towns asked if we were asking for enough," she said.

In other business, the board:

• Heard that Studebaker will attend an Indiana Recycling Coalition seminar the rest of the week. She also is on the slate for a director's position on the IRC board.

• Heard R.R. Donnelley and Sons Co. provided funds for an exterior sign and logo on the district truck.

The sign is on site but is not erected. Made of recycled plastics, extensions to make it higher are on order.

• Approved a resolution to transfer $100 from legal services to legal notices.

• Heard that the spring issue of the newsletter will be distributed soon.

Board of directors are Ron Truex, Avis Gunter, John Kinsey and George Clemens. Brad Jackson and Ernie Wiggins were absent.
