School board business will become a family affair in Warsaw next year when James L. Folk takes his seat on the Warsaw Community Schools Board of School Trustees.
Elected Tuesday as the District 3 representative, Folk will begin his school board term Jan. 1 and will join his daughter, Cathy Folk, who has represented District 2 since 1999.
James Folk said today their relationship will not be a problem in board decisions. "We're two separate individuals," he said.
Asked if he had a comment on his victory, Folk said, "No." Asked about his reasons for running for the school board, Folk read his campaign advertisement that ran in the Times-Union Monday, in which he said he wants to encourage staff to be accountable for excellence, increase parental participation, seek outside sources of funding for technology updates and help noncollege-bound students become more competitive in the job market.
Folk will replace Dan Robinson on the board. Robinson did not run for re-election.
Re-elected to the board for another four years were Craig Allebach, District 6, who is now president of the board, and Charles Sauders, District 4.
Folk, Allebach and Sauders will begin their new terms Jan. 1 and serve until Dec. 31, 2004.
Two incumbents were returned to the Triton School Board - Steve Feldman, District 3, and Kevin Boyer, at-large member.
On the Wawasee School Board, the two at-large seats were up for grabs Tuesday. One incumbent, Jeff Wells, who is also the current school board president, was returned to office, and the other incumbent, David Carey, was defeated by Dallas Winchester II.
Winchester said today he is looking forward to working with the school district in the next four years. His priorities are quality of education, tax rate and communication with parents and taxpayers, he said, though "communication's probably the thing I'll look at the closest."
Tippecanoe Valley, Whitko and North Manchester school boards did not have elections this year.
