County OKs Rural Road Map

Posted

A map showing Warsaw's urban area was presented to the county commissioners Tuesday.

County Highway Superintendent Dennis Pletcher and Warsaw Plan Director Jeremy Skinner said the streets within the city's boundaries are designated as "urban" by the state. The commissioners were asked to sign a letter agreeing with these labels.

Commissioner Ron Truex asked what the difference was between urban and rural streets. Skinner said specifications for urban streets were different and state and federal funding available for urban streets was more than for rural roads.

Truex asked why the commissioners would sign a letter of agreement that meant less funding and Skinner said the state already established the urban designations.

In other business:

• Treasurer Kent Adams approached the commissioners with a contract between the county and Certified IT, Bloomington, allowing property owners to pay taxes via credit card this fall.

• Approved an additional software license for Tippecanoe Township appraisal research as requested by County Assessor Laurie Renier.

• Approved a vacation request as presented by Phil and Ann Eskew of the unimproved West Street. The small area is west of their property off EMS W17 Lane along Webster Lake in Tippecanoe Township.

• Denied a vacation request as presented by Stephen and Mary Solomon regarding a vacation of the right of way off EMS B33 Lane in Tippecanoe Township.

Matt Sandy, assistant planner of the Area Plan Commission, said the BZA voted to deny the request.

Attorney Jay Lavender, representing the Solomons, said the couple plan to dredge the channel and install a seawall.

Remonstrators protested the move saying access to the lake would be denied to other lot owners, despite the establishment of a public easement to Heron Bay.

• Awarded the renovation contract of Bridge 12 to Pioneer & Associates for $85,000.

The bridge spans the Tippecanoe River in Oswego. Construction is slated to begin after Labor Day. Armstrong Road will be closed to one lane to cross the bridge.

The work is slated to take 90 days to complete.

County commissioners are Avis Gunter, Brad Jackson and Truex.
