Kosciusko County Commissioners Tuesday approved a request to rezone property in Tippecanoe Township to allow for a funeral home to be built.
The commission approved a favorable recommendation from the Area Plan Commission for four acres of property owned by Maurice and Doris Dorsey to be rezoned from agricultural to commercial to build a funeral home. The property is at Ind. 13 and Armstrong Road, North Webster.
Owen Family Funeral Home, Syracuse, has expressed interest in purchasing the property to build a funeral home in addition to its existing funeral home at 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse.
Attorney Steve Snyder, Syracuse, Tuesday said the Kosciusko County Board of Zoning Appeals still needs to approve an exception for the funeral home to be allowed in a commercial zoned district.
Planners also approved rezoning 20 acres of land from public to agricultural use in Turkey Creek Township. The property is owned by Limberlost Girl Scouts and they want to rezone the land and sell it to make money.
The commissioners also approved setting the speed limit at 35 miles per hour for the entire length of LaPoint Drive from CR 250E to CR 300E.
Dennis Pletcher, Kosciusko County Highway superintendent, said during Tuesday's commissioners meeting the speed limit is currently posted at 30 miles per hour from CR 250E to Camelot Trail. There is no speed limit currently posted from Camelot Trail to CR 300E.
Pletcher said according to Indiana code, residential district speed limits are already 35 miles per hour without having to be posted, and counties can lower the speed limits postings if they decide.
He said to be consistent, the 30 mile per hour ordinance was revised to 35 miles per hour.
Commissioners also approved county highway workers not spraying weeds in the county for two years while studying if the county needs to have the weeds sprayed due to budgetary reasons.
Pletcher said the weed spraying for broadleaf and detrimental weeds is usually done by a contractor that is selected by an annual bid process. He said some counties don't even spray weeds.
"We need to make sure spraying weeds is something needed due to budget constraints because we feel we need to hold on to money tighter," Pletcher said.
The county sprays the west side of the county on even years and the east side on odd years.
Commissioners Tuesday also approved an inter-local agreement for terminal services data for Silver Lake and Warsaw.
The agreement allowed Kosciusko County to purchase computer equipment and software to continue to provide remote CISCO data access and functionality for other agencies law enforcement vehicles.
The agreement states the annual fee for terminal services access to the data base provided by the county will be $100 per law enforcement vehicle.
Commissioners also approved an ordinance to establish a fund for annual fees collected for terminal services to county law enforcement data.
Commissioner Ron Truex said he and Kosciusko County Councilman Bob Sanders met with Indiana Department of Environmental Management officials last week to discuss developing a county-wide sewer district. They discussed the best way to approach and accomplish the goal.
