County Lowers Speed Limit Near Dangerous Intersection

Posted
Drivers will have to slow down near an intersection county officials said is in dangerous condition.

The Kosciusko County Commissioners approved the lowering of the speed limit on Packerton Road near the intersection with CR 700S. County Highway Superintendent Dennis Pletcher told the commissioners the profile or grade of Packerton Road near the intersection is in in bad shape. Pletcher explained that the road is built on organic soils which have dried out in recent years and contracted, damaging the surface of the road. The road condition combined with the effects of heavy trucks driving to and from the nearby landfill make dangerous situation for drivers.

Pletcher said the county doesn't have enough money to resurface the road, and suggested the county lower the speed limit around the intersection to make it safer.

"I think it's a good time to lower the speed limit to 45 mph, for the safety of motorists," Pletcher said.

The commissioners lowered the speed limit from 55 mph to 45 mph on Packerton Road starting 800 feet south of CR 700S and ending 1,985 feet north of CR 700S.

In other news, the commissioners approved the rezoning of a 6.3 acre plot of land in on the west side of Tower Street, 800 feet north of Pierceton Road, in Pierceton, from Industrial II to Agriculture. County Planner Dan Richard told the commissioners land owner Scott Meadows plans to build a home on the land and apply for an exception to locate his excavating business on the property.
