County Highway Department Seeking Snow Removal BidsKosciusko County Highway Superintendent Scott Tilden asked the county commissioners on Tuesday for permission to seek a subcontractor to plow 12.3 miles of road this winter.
He said the current subcontractor won’t be able to continue. He said that while he will solicit bids from three companies, anyone wanting to submit a bid could do so.
Tilden said his crew plows the vast majority of the county’s 1,170 miles of road, with only two subcontractors. The other sub plows 58 miles of road.
“We do one area of the county where there are 12.3 miles that we have contracted snow removal services out for the last 15 years. We have another part of the county where there are 58 miles done – a little over 70 miles out of 1,170 miles, so we do the majority ourselves,” he said. “The contractor who did the 12.3 miles informed me recently that he will be bowing out of that so we will need to seek quotes for a new one.”
Bid packets are available from Tilden. Sealed proposals are due at the county auditor’s office at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 15, and will be opened at 9:15 a.m. Oct. 16 at the next commissioners meeting.
Tilden announced the county has been awarded $44,250 for 34 at-grade railroad crossings to get painted markings next to railroad crossing signs and stop bars in front of tracks.
Paul Wright, Winona Lake, was named the county’s October Veteran of the Month. He served in Vietnam, stationed at Tuy Hoa, from November 1967 to September 1968 and was wounded Dec. 28, 1967. He faced numerous North Vietnamese sniper attacks and was decorated with multiple awards and ribbons, including the Purple Heart.
In other business, the commissioners:
• Accepted a contract with LPA Consultant for work on the Hand Street bridge over Walnut Creek.
• Approved the contract for the School Guard phone app program to protect area classrooms from intruders and other incidents.
• Heard a report from Ed Rock, emergency management director, regarding a pair of grant award letters.
• Gave permission for Sheriff Rocky Goshert to begin looking for a replacement sport utility vehicle for the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team.
