County Govt. Web Site In Development

Posted

Work on Kosciusko County government's new Web site is progressing.

Tuesday, Area Plan Commission assistant planner Matt Sandy told the Kosciusko County commissioners that he and several other county employees are in the process of implementing the different offices' pages but are working on getting the information from the various departments to put on the Web site. He told the commissioners he needs to know what the commissioners want on their pages of the Web site and presented them with printed copies of other counties' Web sites.

Options the commissioners could include are statement of purpose of the commissioners, calendar of events, meeting agendas, meeting minutes, district maps, list of appointments and other information.

Sandy said he hopes the county's Web site would not be a dead site but a living, changing site.

"We're hoping, fairly quickly, to get it up and running," he said, though they are still working out the bugs in the system.

Ron Truex, middle district county commissioner, asked what has happened to the county's current Web site.

Sandy said the site the county had was a free Web site but they have had problems with it and the server. The problems have existed almost since day one.

County auditor Sue Ann Mitchell said while the county's original site cost them nothing to start, it was never maintained. As for the cost of the new Web site, Mitchell said, it was included in the contract with the Geographical Imaging System and she didn't have a cost for the Web site specifically available at the meeting.

"The benefit will far outweigh what we're paying in the long run," she said.

Asked if the new Web site will help reduce labor hours, Mitchell and Sandy said it would. The commissioners agreed to look at the samples of Web sites Sandy provided and individually back suggestions about the site later.

In other business, the commissioners:

• Approved to repeal the stop sign at the railroad crossing along Ind. 15 at CR 300S, south of Warsaw. The crossing now has lights and gates.

• Approved Creighton Brothers Farms LLC's request to rezone two tracts totaling approximately 78 acres in Wayne Township from agricultural to residential. The 38-acre and 40-acre parcels are on the east side of CR 175E and 1,821 feet north of CR 75N in Wayne Township.

Truex abstained from voting.

• Due to petitioner Jesse Megething failing to appear, the commissioners did not hear his appeal for poor relief from Wayne Township. According to county attorney Mike Miner, the applicant must be present for there to be a hearing.

The county commissioners are Ron Truex, Avis Gunter and Brad Jackson. They meet at 9 a.m. in the county courthouse every other Tuesday.
