A project four years in the making will go live next week, as the Kosciusko County communications center begins using a new radio frequency for dispatching calls.
Beginning Sept. 28, law enforcement within the county will be dispatched on the new 151.085 MHz narrow band frequency. All county law enforcement will use the new frequency with the exception of the Warsaw Police Department, which uses its own system.
The upgrade places county communications in line with federal mandates that require a switch from wide band to narrow band frequencies prior to Jan. 13.
The signal will feed from a Century Link antenna tower on the city’s west side. The replaced tower - a Sheriff Repeater antenna located atop the old Kosciusko County Courthouse - had several “dead spots” in the county, according to the sheriff’s department.
The new tower will sit 347 feet above sea level, the department said.
The old tower will be used in a back-up capacity, the department said.
