County Crash Claims Bethany Christian Student AthleteWhen Bethany Christian Schools learned one of its students was killed in a fatal car accident in Kosciusko County Saturday, it asked for prayers as it mourned the loss.

KeShawn Smith, 18, Goshen, was pronounced dead at the scene of the head-on collision Saturday afternoon.

“We are deeply saddened to share the news of the tragic death of KeShawn Smith, a senior basketball and soccer player for the Bruins. We will miss his ready smile, big heart and great laugh. Keep the family and the BCS community in your prayers as we grieve this tremendous loss,” Bethany Christian Schools said in a statement issued Sunday.

A Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office news release stated that shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, the Kosciusko County 911 Communications Center received multiple reports of a head-on collision in the 8400 block of North Ind. 15. The KCSO, Milford Police and Fire departments and Lutheran EMS were dispatched.

Initial emergency personnel arriving on scene determined that two vehicles were involved in the collision, both of which sustained heavy front-end damage. The Kosciusko County Fatal Accident Crash Team was then requested at the scene.

Preliminary results of the investigation indicate that a 2002 Honda Civic – driven by Smith – was traveling south on Ind. 15. The Civic then appeared to have crossed the center line into the path of a northbound 2013 Ford Expedition, driven by Ramiro Mendoza Fajardo, 30, also of Goshen. The Expedition was towing a 2014 Jeep Commander on a car dolly.

Fajardo and his passenger refused medical treatment.

The crash remains under investigation with the KCSO?and Coroner’s Office.
