County Braces For Icy Winter Storm

The Warsaw area could be covered with up to half an inch of ice by the end of tonight.

According to Mike Boguth at the National Weather Service in North Webster, freezing rain was expected to start around noon today and continue through the night. Periods of sleet are expected as well, but the freezing rain will be predominant.

By morning, accumulations of one-half-inch of ice are expected.

Freezing rain falls to the ground as a liquid but turns to ice once it hits the ground. Sleet turns to ice in the air and hits the ground as ice.

"Freezing rain is more dangerous," said Boguth. "When the rain hits ground, it is so cold that it freezes on contact."

Boguth said the best thing to do in this type of weather is stay off the roads.

"If you do need to go out, slow down and be careful when driving and walking," said Boguth. "Sidewalks will be especially hazardous. The No. 1 piece of advice I have is to slow down."
